Honoring MOM

Honoring MOM

Honoring M O M

Having just come through Easter season, I was reading in all of the Gospel accounts of the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. One of the things that stuck out to me was that even in His dying moments, Jesus still made arrangements for His mother’s future care:
“When Jesus therefore saw His mother and the disciple whom He loved [John] standing by, He said to His mother, ‘Woman, behold your son!’ Then He said to the disciple, ‘Behold your mother!’ And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.” (John 19:26-17)

God is a God of honor. Because He created all of humanity and sees every human being as either His child in vital relationship with Him or one of His children that has rejected His love and that He longs to be in relationship with. He desires that we show honor and respect to everyone no matter what their status or place in life. Especially in our closest physical relationship—our Mother—His desire is that we always show her honor. Maybe your mom was great and you’re both walking strong in the Lord today, but for many, Mom wasn’t perfect, made a lot of mistakes, and there is a strain in your relationship—it just seems it is always hard to spend time together without some type of conflict or offense. To all of us, God is saying on this Mother’s Day and every day, “show honor.” We may not agree on every political or religious view, she may have her opinions on our parenting skills, but we’re told to always show her respect and if we disagree, to disagree “honorably.”

“Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her…” (Proverbs 31:28).

…this is what we’re to do this Mother’s Day, not based on Mom’s perfection or lack thereof, but based on God’s Word and His principles for how we are to relate to the people in our lives, and especially to Mom. No matter what you do, no matter how much you spend or don’t spend this Mother’s Day, in all you do, show honor to your Mom and if she isn’t alive, show honor to the others she birthed and to the ones that call you “Mom.”
